A footprint is not an operating envelope
A cabinet's listed depth describes the closed object. When a drawer opens, it uses extra space in front. The usable arrangement depends on what is opposite that drawer: an empty mat, a fragile model or your hands. Reserve the opening movement separately even if you do not open every drawer during every session.
The planner uses one rear band across the entire bench width. This deliberately simple model can over-reserve space when your storage occupies only one corner. It is not a packing optimizer. If the conservative plan fails, try a paper layout that represents each object individually before concluding that nothing will fit.
Work through the subtraction
Take a hypothetical 24 inch deep surface. A 6.5 inch cabinet plus 3 inches of measured access travel creates a 9.5 inch rear reservation. With a 1 inch front margin, just 13.5 inches of working depth remains. A 12 inch deep mat fits geometrically; an 18 inch one does not. The 3 inch travel is an example input, not a specification for any featured cabinet.
Closing the drawer after each use may make the overlap tolerable for one person, but that is a different workflow from being able to keep it open. Choose which workflow you are actually planning and record the assumption.
When to move the storage
Move seldom-used categories to a separate shelf before giving up your main project area. Try a side position for a small active tray, or bring a single parts drawer to the bench when needed, if the drawer is intended to be removed. Check the complete product instructions before using or mounting any cabinet.
You do not need to wall-mount storage to make this plan work. Wall construction, fixing suitability and load limits are outside our calculator. If neither a rear nor a side arrangement leaves a useful surface, a pack-away project box may be a better organizational choice than a larger cabinet.
