Give the project priority
Remove items unrelated to the current dry project and put them in their appropriate existing homes. Keep the instructions, active parts and frequently used tools together. Do not discard unfamiliar materials or components simply because they are hard to categorise; identify them before deciding what to do with them.
Mark the working rectangle with a paper sketch or a suitable temporary outline. Avoid adhesive on a surface where it could cause damage. The purpose is to see how much space the task needs, not to build an attractive permanent layout on the first attempt.
Use temporary categories
Write simple labels for what remains: current parts, shared tools, return to storage and needs identification. Use existing containers only where they are suitable for the contents. Keep original warnings and identification intact.
During the next few sessions, note each interruption. If you cannot find the right item, improve the category or label. If you cannot open a container, improve access. If the project does not fit, revisit the layout. These are different problems, and a larger organizer may address only one of them.
Turn the observation into a buying brief
A useful brief might say: a shallow container for these eight categories, with this maximum footprint, accessible without moving the mat. It should also say what you do not need, such as a carrying handle for storage that never moves.
Before buying, check whether an existing shelf or drawer can meet the brief after rearrangement. If a purchase remains useful, compare exact dimensions and limitations rather than styling alone. Keep a note of the intended improvement so you can later judge whether it happened. The site earns from some shopping links, but a successful plan can involve no purchase at all.
