Give the location and the contents different jobs
A code such as A03 tells you where to look. A phrase such as brass washers tells you what should be there. Keep both on the label when a collection needs an index. The location stays with the drawer; the contents description changes when you deliberately repurpose it. For a tiny collection, contents alone may be enough.
Use identifying information you know to be correct. Copy technical sizes from the original packaging where appropriate, not from a visual guess. Shorten repeated words only when the abbreviation will still be obvious after several weeks away from the hobby.
Make a sample before printing a batch
Measure the flat label area or removable insert, not the entire drawer front. Print one sample on plain paper at actual size and check the fit. Our tool accepts your own label width and height in millimeters, but printer margins and browser settings can still change the result. It is a cut-your-own paper layout, not a template aligned to a proprietary pre-cut label sheet.
View the sample from the usual working position. If the label needs a smaller font to hold a long sentence, move the detail to an inventory note and retain a brief identifying name on the drawer. Good contrast matters more than coordinating the label with the room.
Maintain the map when the system changes
Start with a few labels for the most confusing locations. Work with them before printing a full cabinet. Keep a separate list only if it reduces searching; an elaborate spreadsheet that is never updated adds another place to be wrong.
