Measure the task, not the photograph
Lay out the largest piece involved in your usual project, plus the ruler or template used with it. The usable cutting area must suit the actual task. A mat that fits the table but forces unsupported work beyond its intended surface is not a successful purchase. If a task needs more room than the table provides, change the workspace or task instead of treating overhang as extra capacity.
Keep the product's nominal size, actual outside dimensions and marked grid area distinct. Retail titles sometimes emphasize a familiar size label; the border may change the external footprint. Ask for an outer measurement when the fit is tight.
Compare both orientations
Suppose the planner leaves a 26 × 15 inch clear rectangle. An 18 × 12 inch mat fits either with 18 inches across the bench or, only if the depth permits, with 12 inches across it. Here the rotated depth would be 18 inches, so that orientation fails. A 24 × 18 inch mat fails both orientations. All dimensions in this example are illustrative.
The planner shows width and depth separately because area alone is misleading. Two shapes with the same area can fit very differently. Leave additional room for the way you work; a geometric pass with no spare depth is not a comfort recommendation.
Check the intended blade use
Do not assume every self-healing mat is suitable for every cutter. OLFA's RM-SG page specifies rotary use, while its FCM-12x17 page includes fixed-blade knives. These are model-specific statements, not a claim that one material is always better. Follow the instructions for the exact mat and tool together.
Our shortlist includes a folding option for investigation, with a manufacturer link rather than an unverified Amazon match. We have not physically tested cutting performance. If you already own a suitable mat, try moving the storage first; a change in layout may remove the need to buy another one.
